Solvang Elders, Etc.

We took a little trip up to Solvang today and inspected the apartment there.  This is me chatting with Elder Bate (Ogden) and Elder Jorgenson (Boise).

Elder Mecham takes picture of all the apartments when he visits them, for the records.  He was snapping pictures all over the apartment, and it was hard to stay out of the way :)  We took these elders to lunch at a Chinese restaurant -- their choice.  It was fun to visit with them and get to know them a little better.  Their area is quite large, but it sounds like they have some great investigators -- and they recently had a baptism.

We had an enjoyable trip and saw some fall colors.  Most of the trees, however, are either evergreens or they don't change colors.  The hillsides are very dry and brown, but Solvang is one of the prettiest areas around.  Of course, I always love driving up the coast and seeing the ocean.  I keep hoping to spot some dolphins; Elder Mecham has seen some on some of his many trips to the Santa Barbara Airport and other places up the coast.  I still have time :)

Last night (Friday) we took dinner to the Traveling Elders' apartment, since they cannot come to our place, due to the fact that it is out of their assigned proselyting area.  So we hauled up to their place a crockpot of Santa Fe chicken, rice, shredded cheese, sour cream, green salad, pretzel salad, and lime pie.  They appreciated it.  And we had a fun visit with them.  I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Elder Cary and Elder Van Tassell.  They are wonderful missionaries.  They are the ones teaching both Shawntele and Kim.

Speaking of which, I'm distraught about Kim and her situation.  She is currently staying with an acquaintance and his "roommate."  She and her three kids.  She has GOT to find a place to live.  Michael, the father of Audrena, ought to be strung up!  He has her van and car seat for Audrena, and who knows what all.  Of course, we don't know the whole situation, but she is really in a mess.  Since the elders are continuing to teach her, they had the address of where she is staying now.  On top of all the mess she's in, she is still taking missionary lessons and wants to be baptized.  I felt so helpless when we visited her -- she is at her wit's end and weeps easily.  She had made a list of what she needs to do, and it seems her hands are tied to make much progress.  The kids have got to be unsettled in their little minds, being drug from place to place.  Yet they are well behaved and she is good to them.  Audrena woke up from a nap while we were visiting today.  She wanted me to hold her, and of course I love her to pieces and held her and loved on her.  She snuggled her head on my shoulder and didn't want to go back to her mom.  It's been several days since we've seen Kim and her children, yet Audrena seems to remember and like me.  It melts my heart.  I asked Kim if she needed anything, and she admitted she needed milk.  We left her with a few dollars to get some groceries.  But she has no car.  She doesn't want to impose on people.  We were actually taking her a list of job possibilities that the counselor in the bishopric had put together. Who will take care of those little kids while she works, even if she finds a job?  What a mess she is in!  We keep her and her sweet children in our prayers!  I wish we could do more to help.  We will attend the ward leadership meeting tomorrow (not sure which one it is) and see if anything more can be done. I know the ward has helped her lots already.

Thanksgiving with The Blues

We had a very lovely dinner with Elder and Sister Blue at their little apartment.  We enjoyed ourselves very much.  As Ryan put it, we are so glad we've "found somebody we can call family" here!  We love them and enjoy serving with them.  They are a choice couple!

Fried chicken, potatoes and gravy, homemade rolls, cranberry sauce, corn,
dressing, pretzel salad, veggies, and sparkling cider.  YUM!
Everything was scrumptious!

Dessert was Sister Blue's homemade pumpkin pie and I made Dad's lime pie, which for the first time ever did not turn out. Even after four hours in the freezer, it wasn't even lime pudding.  It was more like lime soup.  :(   I bought a can of sweetened condensed "creamer" at a Pacific Islands market, and evidently it is different than the regular sweetened condensed milk.  Sweeter and runnier.  Sigh.  We ate it anyway.

Recital

My little keyboard class had a recital.  Love these sisters!

Morning Walk

This is a common sight on my morning walk :)
Always under the same little tree, which must drop something tasty for them to eat.

After I took the pictures, they got startled and flew off.  The pigeons to who knows where, and the ducks up and right down into the swimming pool just next door.  Funny guys :)

Ducks in a Pond . . .

Hey, didn't you guys hear?  The pool's closed for the winter!!

Oh Boy!

Very slow at the office lately -- been doing some family history indexing.

Sadly, we have another missionary going home this week.  I know none of the circumstances/details.  He's only been here two months :(

Lots has happened with Kim, Michael, the kids, and the Belisles.  Where to begin . . .  First off, when I previously said Kim had gotten some state help and that she would be okay for a month, I obviously misunderstood.  I think she can get food, but as far as where to stay, she could not afford to stay in the motel.

Kim and the three kids moved in with the Belisles last week.  The missionaries had a great discussion with them all.  They had another discussion set up Monday evening, but Brother Belisle was not going to be able to be there, so the Elders called to see if we could go (they cannot be alone with the women and kids in the apartment).  So of course we were happy to go.

When we arrived, Brother Belisle (Chase) was just pulling up in his truck -- not sure if Sister Belisle (April) had called him or why he was home, because he had not planned to be.  Michael was also there; he walked over to the truck and spoke with Chase, then as we crossed the street to head to the apartment, Michael said he wanted to talk with us.  The Elders had just arrived too.  As we were talking with Michael, who said he had apologized to Chase, Kim headed up the street pushing Audrena (sp?) in the umbrella stroller.  It was very cool outside -- no jacket or blanket on either of them.  Kim said she needed to "get some air."  Michael was upset -- I won't go into all the details, but evidently some voices had been raised and who knows what all had been said.  We calmed Michael down and he was supposedly leaving -- on foot -- and we went to speak with April, Chase, and the Elders, who were standing outside.  Oh, and the three other kids were inside, and we learned that Ashlyn has pneumonia.  She was watching out the window.  As we were talking, Michael, who was on foot and supposedly leaving, turned around and headed up the street in the direction that Kim went with Audrena.  So Randy and I got in our car to find them and make sure Michael didn't do anything rash.

Okay -- so -- domestic problems.  Nasty things said.  Bad situation all around.  Randy ended up driving Michael across town -- dropped him off where he said he had friends.  No, he is not looking for work.  No, he is not particularly interested in learning about the gospel.  He wants his baby and talked of taking her away from Kim.

Meanwhile back at the apartment, the elders showed pictures and talked with the kids.  Kim came in sobbing with a cold baby.  I held Audrena and rubbed her cold, bare feet.  Kim went and showered, then came out with the rest of us.  What a lovely situation for the elders to be put into.  It really is a good thing we were there!

Short discussion on Priesthood blessings --  a healing blessing was given to Ashlyn, a general one to Kim -- then Peiper Belisle (the out-of-control daughter) climbed onto the chair and said it was her turn.  The elders gave her a blessing too.  The elders left for another appointment, and we left too.

Tuesday evening I saw Kim, April, and baby Audrena at a Relief Society activity.  We had a "swap meet" -- (sort of like a giant garage sale, and they both picked out some clothing and a few other things.)  All seemed good.

Wednesday afternoon, yesterday, I got a call from Kim (using April's phone).  She was crying -- was outside with Ashlyn and Damien -- Audrena was with grandparents --  Michael's parents, who he says are licensed foster care givers.  Ashlyn was still sick and was coughing.  Kim said she could not "take it" any more -- staying with the Belisles, that is.  She is very grateful for their help, but their daughter is out of control and not good to or for her kids (true), and the place is less than clean (also true).  However, what other options does this poor lady have?  NONE.  She has made a series of bad choices in her life, and now her life is a total mess -- she has three kids (actually five kids -- two older ones living elsewhere), no home, no money, no family to help, no job.  My heart goes out to her -- what in the world is she going to do?  She has been helped by the transient bishop, the relief society, the Belisles -- what now?  (The Relief Society president told me that the bishop has several families needing financial assistance right now.)

The Relief Society President called briefly Wednesday evening to say she had spoken to Kim.  Chase had just arrived home.  He suggested they say a prayer and talk things over.  (GOOD for him!)

I called April around noon today (Thursday) and she said they had "worked things out."  Kim was gone at the time -- took April's car to go get Audrena.  Ashlyn was feeling better and had gone to school today.

Got a call from Elder Cary this afternoon.  He said they had just had a lesson with Kim and that it went great!  She is wanting to be baptised.  He said so often when investigators become serious about the gospel, their lives fall to pieces - (and how! -- Satan!!).  And when they have these discussions, they can literally feel the difference as they experience peace and have the Spirit bear testimony to them.

So I have confidence that the Lord will bless Kim and help her work things out.  She could become an awesome member of the church who could help countless others.  I'm praying for this miracle in her life!  And the lives of her precious children!

Shawntele Update

The elders text us Monday night to say THEY had Shawntele's cigarettes :D  ---  that she wanted to be baptized.  Best thing -- this was all her idea!  After a couple back-and-forth texts, they called.  She said she was ready to make a commitment -- that smoking simply was not worth it -- her cigarettes were not worth her salvation.

Okay, the very cool thing about this is that Sunday, just the day before, in our Ward Council Meeting we discussed Shawntele.  Bishop said he felt that the group in attendance there should include Shawntele in our fast that day - that she needed the help she could receive through our fasting and prayers that day.  And then the very next day, SHE decides to make this commitment to quit smoking and to get ready to be baptized!  Oh, the power of fasting and prayer!

We, meaning Elder Mecham and I (as the elders are traveling/training out of town) were set to meet with Shawntele this evening -- been preparing a little lesson on the Holy Ghost and what He can do for her -- but she ended up with other plans.  So we will meet with her tomorrow evening instead.  She said she is on her second day now with a nicotine patch!  Yay!  We really love her and hope she can conquer this time!  Oh, I also have a copy of the poem, "The Race," to give to her - Elder Cary told her about it, and she wanted to have a copy.  [I love the Internet when I need to find something!]

We pray for Shawntele every day.  She is going to school online and this "module" has been very stressful for her.  But she has come such a long way -- we are so proud of her!

Kim and Michael

Well, we didn't meet with Kim and Michael on Thursday.  It had been an exhausting week for them and they needed a day of rest.  But we did meet with them Friday briefly.  Of course, I should have written about this much sooner, because I don't remember exactly what we discussed Friday.

Saturday afternoon we met with them and introduced them to Elder Van Tassell, Elder Cary, and Elder Lilfungula.  Besides we five missionaries, there were Kim, Michael, the three children, plus Michael's sister, Nicole -- having a discussion in a motel room.  And it was fantastic.  Nicole, now 27, was baptized when she was about 11, but has not been active for many years if ever.  Again, they were very receptive.  Said they'd be to church Sunday. AND said they would commit to baptism next month!

Kim and Ashlyn did come to church -- Michael dropped them off.   Kim said her other two children were sick.  And Nicole had to work.  Kim and Ashlyn stayed for the entire block.  Ashlyn loved Primary and was all excited to be baptized right away :)  Kim did tell Ashlyn's Primary teacher that they would be back!

Another couple -- Chase and April -- less actives which the ward has been working with, were at church Sunday for the first time in several weeks.  Turns out Kim knew them -- Kim had lent a helping had to them several years ago.  Now they have offered to help Kim and her family.  April commented that their both being at church that day was not just a coincidence.  Probably not.  Motel room is too expensive for Kim and Michael to stay.  It looks like they will move in with Chase and April for a while  (which will be interesting.  Kim and Michael are quite strict with the kids.  April and Chase have a little girl that pretty much runs everything.)  -   (by way of background, April had other children taken from her and spent time in prison [don't know Chase's story - but the children were theirs together] - now she seems ready to come back to church.  I hear she is ready but Chase is dragging his feet . . .)

Kim has had some medical issues which prevented them from meeting with the elders Monday evening.  Now the elders are out of town for the rest of week, but we will attempt to meet with them.  Kim took our phone numbers and said she would call today.  We were unable to get through to her all day yestereday on the motel phone -- I would call and we would get cut off almost immediately.

When we visited very briefly Tuesday evening to make sure Kim was okay, Nicole was there again.  But not Michael.  Not sure what all is happening, but still there appears to be a very sincere desire to learn more.  The next few days will tell.  The kids are now comfortable with us, and I got some great snuggles from the baby before we had to leave :)

More later.
